“The SLS recognizes that colonization and associated attitudes, policies and institutions have significantly harmed, and continue to harm, Indigenous peoples’ relationship with this land. And for many years those same systems and beliefs deliberately served to exclude Indigenous students from higher education. Today, we are proud that Indigenous students are enrolling and succeeding in Windsor Law programs in increasing numbers.
We believe that including a respectful and meaningful territory acknowledgement can contribute to this work. The SLS recognizes that Windsor Law is situated on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, which includes the Ojibwa, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. The SLS acknowledges the harm that colonization has, and continues to cause, Indigenous communities, including the role that the law, the legal system and lawyers play in this harm.
We encourage law students to think about how they have come to be here, including the impacts of colonialism. The SLS commits to take steps to create a warm, welcoming and respectful learning environment to support our goal of a campus community that is accepting of diversity and inclusive of Indigenous ways of knowing and being.”
